Jon Berk Auction At ComicConnect Ends This Week Monday-Friday

5 SESSIONS, LOTS ENDING 30 SEC APART, BEGINS MAY 15, ENDS JUN 12-16, 7PM-12AM EDT

 

It is very seldom you meet a person universally liked and respected by anybody and everybody in the comicbook collecting community. Jon Berk is that person. Respected for his passion for collecting, for one of the most incredible collections of vintage comicbooks and original comic art ever amassed, the discovery of the Lamont Larson Collection, his endeavors to teach future generations of comicbook collectors, and for being an all-around good ambassador and steward for the hobby.

 

It is difficult to pick highlights to talk about in this letter. It is probably the first time I’ve ever had an auction where an Action #1 and Detective #27 are not the only centerpieces. The condition of the Mile High runs of Mystery Men, Wonderworld, and Fantastic Comics, including the classic Fantastic Comics #3 CGC 9.4, are beyond words. The Court Case Copy of Action #7, featuring the 2nd Superman cover ever, is one part awesome comic and one part historical document. Let’s not forget there are over 225 Centaurs, many of them highest graded! Over 140 Larson copies! Over 130 Mile Highs! This is getting ridiculous. How did Jon do it? I hear his words of advice ringing in my ears “Don’t have feet of clay. A lot of this stuff comes around just once. You’ve got to be ready to go for it.”

The original art collection is as magnificent. The “grail” is the cover to Planet Comics #1 by the legendary Lou Fine. Fine’s elegant and sophisticated line work, cross-hatching, and ability to set a mood is unparalleled. Schomburg’s classic All New Comics #8 piece has elements of his Suspense #3 cover and any of a multitude of his Timely covers all wrapped into one. The contrast used on Catman #25 by Rudy Palais makes for a memorable cover. Pep #30 by Bob Montana is just so overwhelming in its imagery it blows my mind every time I look at it. Pages from Spider-Man #6 by Ditko, Daredevil #1 by Everett, and Fantastic Four #3 by Kirby round-out what would be anybody’s dream Silver Age art collection. With over 300 pieces there is something for everyone.

In closing, other than Jon being a consummate gentleman, he is also a pretty funny guy. Take a look at the letter he sent to Marvel that was published back in the 70s. The answer is pretty darn good as well. Good luck in the auction and as always, thank you all so very much for your patronage and friendship.
