S.H.I.E.L.D. #9 Kirby Sketch Variant

This is one of the few books that I've been able to have signed in person. I set it down in front of Mr. Sternanko, he lit up like a kid on Christmas. He said something to the effect of "Oh wow! Do you know how rare this one is?" I had no idea that artists kept up with variants at all, regardless of whether it is their work or not. Depending upon who you ask, it's either the 1:75 or 1:100 variant.
Anyhow, being the storyteller he is, he wanted to know if I knew the history behind the cover artwork. Of course, I had no idea. Keep in mind, I'm relating it as told with no embellishment or intentional changes. Mr. Sternako decided he wanted to draw comics, so he went straight to Marvel because that's where the best artists worked. He says he marched straight into Stan Lee's office, slapped down his portfolio and told Stan that he would be the new artist. Stan looked over his work and told him that he would need to ink another artist's work to get a foot in the door and he shuffled around some pages in his office and came up with a few Jack Kirby pages for Nick Fury. Lee told him to take them home and ink them and bring them back next Tuesday at 1. He said he excited to work on Kirby art and finished it all that same night. He said Kirby had never looked so good! He could have returned them the next morning but he wanted to show Stan that he could follow instructions and waited until Tuesday at 1. Stan hired him on the spot and asked what book he wanted to work on, he could pick ANY book! Mr. Steranko asked what the worst selling title was and Lee informed him that it was Strange Tales with Nick Fury but that he could work on anything. Mr. Steranko told him that he wanted the worst book because he was going turn it into a best seller to prove that he can do anything. The rest is history...
The long and short of it is that this cover was one of the pages Stan Lee had him ink that fateful day. I'd give anything to sit and drink with Mr. Steranko, the life he has lived would fascinating regardless of who tells the story but he is a great speaker and even better storyteller!
