Got to meet G.I. Joe creator Larry Hama at the 11th Annual Action Figure Expo 2014 in Mississauga, Ontario. He was doing pencil commissions during the convention and his list filled up extremely quickly! I had Larry draw my favorite character Snake Eyes! I got in 15min early for bringing a toy donation. I was the first person in line at his booth... but I still I ended up 8th on his commission list. lol, guess that's one of the benefits for being a dealer at the show. It's unfortunate for all the disappointed Hama fans that didn't get a sketch though. His commission list was cut off after about 15 people about which was around an hour after doors opened. Signed by Stan Lee at his final comic convention appearance at Silicon Valley Comic Con 2018. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ It took a few hours to get to my sketch with all the signing he was doing in between. He was the only reason I attended the convention so I hung out and asked him some questions about G.I. Joe. 1. Someone asked Larry if there would be a new line of G.I. Joe figures coming out in for 2014-2015. Larry said the G.I. Figures had been discontinued by Hasbro until the G.I. Joe 3 movie comes out. Larry said they have no faith in the product line. 2. I asked if he had any input into either of the G.I. Joe movies (I'm a big G.I. Joe fan but I think the first movie was terribly written). Larry said no he had no input it's a case of Hollywood thinking they can do a better job. 3. Larry currently draws the 1 in 10 retailer incentive variant sketch covers for each issue of IDW G.I. Joe A Real American Hero (Continued from the original Marvel series). The sketch covers always look very similar to the standard published covers. I asked him if these were cover concept sketches that he drew for the cover artists to base their drawing on. Larry said yes these are cover concepts he comes up with. He said for almost every comic he wrote he would came up with the cover concept for almost every comic he wrote. The exception being the Wolverine series where he ddidn't have any input. Larry draws a pencil concept sketch and scans/emails it to the artist along with the script. He said all his old Marvel cover concepts were likely tossed out many years before they were collectable. He now sells his IDW G.I. Joe cover concepts through ebay as new issues come out. 4. A couple collectors approached with 30+ items to sign. He has a sign on his table that says only 5 items per person. He said the reason he limits the amount of items he signs is he has really bad arthritis in his hands. He said it physically hurts to sign more than five. But Larry said when he tells people that they usually listen and the still ask him to sign all 30+ items. For large batches he charges a fee but the first 5 are free. He said sketching doesn't affect him the same cause he's adapted to using his arm more than his fingers or wrist. 5. I asked Larry if I paid extra would he ink the commission he drew for me. He said he only works in pencil and he's not a finisher. He said when working with ink you lose some of the expression which is why he only works in pencil. 6. Larry also metioned his convention sketches use to be free. But other artists at conventions would get mad at him and would say he shouldn't be doing that. So he startes charging a nominal price instead.
