Sandman Overture #1 by Kelley Jones

My friend Rich Henn set up a sketch opportunity with Kelley Jones and at the last minute, I decided I would get in on it. The big question was what sketch I would want done. Deadman? Batman? Possibly even Swamp Thing? Then I remembered his work on Sandman! That would be it, but I had no Sandman blank and neither did Rich. Dan at onestopcomicshop.com stepped in with a copy which I bought from him and he shipped to Rich to make the deadline. My request was a full body sketch similar to the Sandman Statue from Bowen Designs (the second picture) which Mr. Jones had designed. The sketches were planned to be done at SDCC 2014 but such was not to be...

Fast forward more than a year and I finally receive my sketch! It had been a rough day at work so seeing the box from Rich was welcome surprise. I open it up and wrinkle my nose. After more than a year, I looked and thought Mr. Jones had just phoned it in. I was bummed. The next day, I looked again and realized that I had made the rookie mistake of basing an opinion on a glance. The more I look, the more I see that the pose is quite similar to the one used for the statue except for one thing...Orpheus has his hands in the air. Like he was conducting... say... an overture? Since that epiphany, this sketch has grown on me a little more every time I look at it which is often.
